Recipe For Saving December 2017 – Sausage Rolls

Sausage rolls are an English favorite of mine. On a trip back to the UK last month, I bought one at a village bakery and ate it outside while still warm – it was delicious. Here is a simple recipe that gets you beautiful looking and really tasty sausage rolls.

English Sausage Rolls (Makes 12 rolls)

  • 1lb Sausage meat (e.g. Jimmy Dean) $3.99
  • 1 pack (2 sheets) puff pastry (e.g. Trader Joes) $2.99
  • Dijon mustard (optional)
  • 1 egg for sealing pastry
  • Salt and pepper

  • Remove pastry from the freezer and allow to defrost per the instructions
  • Remove sausage meat from packaging and add 3 tsps salt. Mix thoroughly and add extra herbs such as sage, thyme if you like those flavors
  • Divide the sausage meat into 12 equal portions
  • Unroll the pastry and cut each sheet into 6 rectangles to make a total of 12 rectangles
  • Spread a thin layer of mustard along the center of each rectangle
  • Take one portion of sausage meat and place in a thin strip along the pastry
  • Roll the pastry around the meat and seal with an egg wash
  • Crimp each end of the roll, and brush the top with the egg wash
  • Bake in the oven for ~15 minutes at 350F or until golden brown
